Isn’t Everyday Mother’s Day?
THE DANDELION THEORY
Oregonlive ran this photo of a little guy finding a Dandelion in the aftermath of one of Haiti’s earthquakes. He is bursting with joy to give this humble flower to someone. I want to think it’s his mother, or maybe his Nana. Whoever is on the other end of this gift is someone very special. To a child, everyday is Mother’s Day.
Yes, when you are a mother, everyday is “mothers day” for better or worse. I am glad there is a day to remind us all these gals run a lot of worlds. I’m all for a little special treatment on any day! I know a lot of “mother’s” who don’t have a single kid…they spread their love to all of us in so many ways.
For most holidays, many of us would rather be home than in a restaurant. We know our homes are where most of the really good memories happen. My kids all know I would rather spend time in the kitchen cooking for, or with them than receiving a gift. However, with distance and schedules, often Mother’s Day is a holiday apart. Thus gifts arriving via UPS are a part of these days.
Thus the Dandelion Theory.
Whose heart does not melt when presented with the simple dandelion, carefully sleeved out of fields of thousands, just for you? What if most of the gifts we received were this simple? Today both Kristen and I give you our ideas of Mother’s Day gifts from a favorite online source, Food 52.
For years I have tried to train anyone wishing to bestow us with a gift to have it be a consumable. Something special in the moment, things that we can enjoy and savor till they are gone. Goodies we look forward to the next time a gift such as this arrives. Here are some I’d like to receive.
Candles – Love to light them first thing in the morning ,as we move about the kitchen getting ready for the day, and after the kitchen is cleaned up at night. A start and finish to the day!
Personally, I have 2 aprons I switch up and wear everyday. It’s so much easier than changing clothes in case of cooking/clean up mishaps. I don’t need another but had to add this one in when I saw it on another blog. It’s a good gift and fits with today’s trend of use it or loose it.
Most mothers have a chocolate chip cookie recipe they make that says “I love you!”. How about a supply of chips? To really be the coolest kid, how about you make the first batch?
Growing up we had a neighbor that called all kids “sugar”. She wasn’t the “Leave it to Beaver” mom, but she did always have a cup of coffee and real sugar cubes we got to snitch out of a sugar bowl. She was an upholstery master and always had a mouth full of tacks and a smoke in her mouth. Naturally, we all gravitated to her house. I’d like these little stars to remind me of her everyday I drink my tea.
I’m not a mother yet, but I have years of giving Mother’s Day gifts to the most special gal in my life. Now that I am planning our wedding, and looking towards building a life together, I think more about the home I grew up in. Yes, many of the really happy memories happen at home where our Moms are. Here are a few gifts I know my Mom would love because you will find her in the kitchen so much of the time…being our Mom!
Not only does my mom love to cook but she also loves to bake! The Grey Swirl Glass Cake Stand will look great in the kitchen with my dad’s favorite Sakitumi Cake.
My mom is the greatest cook I know! There is nothing I love more than coming home to one of her home cooked meals. With her collection of Southern Living Cookbooks, I thought a new cook book would be the perfect Mother’s Day gift for her to get creative and inspired in the kitchen.
My parents finally just purchased a new oven for themselves. Why not get her a classic Staub Essential French oven to make some of her favorite dishes in.

She’d love us all using coasters without her asking! I think these would inspire us all.
After seeing Kristen’s suggestion of the coasters, I want to add one more item to my wish list. What’s more perfect for a Mother’s Day Sunday brunch than a Bloody Mary dripping onto a coaster (virgin are so good, too)? Plus, I use this spice mix in scrambled eggs and even sprinkled on fruit. So good!
