Home, Home On The Range “Hood”
Fall is lingering in the minds of most of us lately even if Mother Nature is still on vacation. To us, this means its time to pull out the cookbooks and start cooking the foods that show our families how much we love them. Time for our range hoods to get back into action.
How High Should A Range Hood Be?
In general, most non flame installations suggest a distance from 20″ to 24″ between the bottom of the hood and the cooking surface. Over a gas range, this distance should be between 27″ and 30″, unless otherwise specified. Higher BTU models may suggest a bit higher. For further information, please refer to the installation manual of your model.
How Wide Should A Range Hood Be?
Indoor hoods are recommended to be 1 size larger than your cooktop size (overlapping the cooktop by 3 to 6 inches on each side). For example, if your cooktop size is 30”, the ideal size would be a 36” or 42” hood.
How Many CFM’s Should A Range Hood Have?
When calculating the minimum size of a range hood, there are three things you should consider…the size of the cooking surface, the amount of heat produced by the cooking surface, and the volume of the kitchen. If the range hood is attached to a wall, you should have 100 cubic feet per minute (cfm) per linear foot.
How Much Of A Design Feature Can A Range Be?
Ah, now we get to the fun part of making sure we don’t burn our homes down. A range hood is an important element in a kitchen design. This is an area where our personality can really shine through. Look back up at the photo above with the subway tile wrapped chimney and don’t miss that elevated oil section at the back of the range. Takes some planning but oh how handy while charming the pants off us! And there is just something about adding in a wood element, like in the examples below, that really warms up the hub of our home.
Back Splashes…Why Do We Need One?
Simply put, a back splash is to be made of a non combustible material and in our opinion is even more important than a hood. Drywall burns quickly. If we read all the install instructions of some of these high heat producing ranges, we see that some mfgs recommend a cement board product behind the decorative covering. Again, follow the recommendations so that the pretty splash you’ve been dreaming of is safe and sound.
Other Types Of Range Hoods
Of course we have our vast array of options in stainless.
Next we have the telescoping models, the over the island models and decorative finish models.
Two things are for certain when considering any of the above Friday Favorites in range hoods. One, there is a range hood design for every one. Two, with all this knowledge, the most important thing to remember about a range hood is to turn it on. Always comes back to operator responsibility!

Yes we do too as you can tell! With a little planning hoods can be a feature in our kitchens as they function.
Thanks! This post is for me as my husband and I are not satisfied with the range hood we have in our kitchen. I think now we will come to a solution.
