How Two Interior Designers With 30 Years Between Them Became Partners
The Old Chick

A funny thing happened enroute to my retirement…..I found the partner of my dreams!
After more than 3 decades, of endless opportunities in various parts of the country implementing multi faceted projects within the design world, I was considering the best way to ease out of the fast pace demands of a free lance designer. My husband was retiring and we were once again relocating. What better time to be more serious about slowing down and exploring the option of doing less, traveling more for pleasure and enjoying life with fewer demands. Sounded like a good plan and I set a realistic timeline to allow for a transition.
For years I’ve developed and maintained relationships with real estate agents, builders, sub contractors and vendors. Each invaluable parts of a team that enable me to offer complete and innovative design packages to the ongoing referral based clientele I am privileged to work with.
Ironically, the thing about intentionally trying to slow down is that opportunities to work on new and exciting projects dramatically increase. It is nearly impossible to let the team down by turning away valued, long term and, exciting new clients.
As the self imposed timeline to retire was quickly approaching, with no clear way to transition in sight, the perfect solution happened during one phone call. The daughter of a dear client had recently completed her education in design and was looking for a mentor who could assist her in learning all aspects of project design. Very quickly I realized that her advanced skills with design related technologies could be an asset to our team. We’ve grown together to the benefit of our clients. With every project we are successfully combining years of experience and relationships with new resources and time saving technology.
The Young Chick
Kristen Under 50
I never thought at seven years old, working with my parents interior designer selecting paint colors, fabrics, furniture, wallpaper, drapery and rugs for my new bedroom, that it would be a foreshadow of my life to come. That day I met my future mentor, role model and business partner.
Even though I was young, I realized what a difference you can make in someone’s life by designing a room that is their dream come true! There wasn’t a day that I didn’t feel like a princess in my room. I realized I wanted to make that difference in someone else’s life and help them create the home of their dreams.
While growing up, interior design was always my top career choice. I pursued that career, attended Indiana University and finished with a Bachelor of Science degree in Interior Design. After graduating, I started working for Creative Kitchen and Bath. CK&B is a showroom featuring a number of leading kitchen and bathroom manufacturers’ products. As a young designer out of college I knew I needed a mentor, someone that could lead and guide me in the design world. However, I didn’t know how to go about finding this mentor. About this same time, my parents house was ready for updating. 20 years after buying it, they turned to the same designer for her expertise. I, of course, had to be a part of this process and was able to reconnect with my now mentor.
Her experience, knowledge and wisdom combined with my technological skills, energy, and enthusiasm has created the perfect partnership. Since reconnecting, we have worked daily on all levels of design projects. We have grown to become great teammates. We compliment each others skills and have same the same dedicated work ethic for our clients. We communicate in the same timely manor and, most importantly, truly enjoy working together. We are a 100% match!
