HOW TO PREVENT BUYERS REMORSE WHEN PURCHASING FURNISHINGS

images 2.jpeg

Did you buy that “cheaper” sofa, that just isn’t right or is falling apart?  The one you are now trying to “fix” with throw pillows.  The one that requires you to have the condescending warranty guy on speed dial to keep patching it back together?  Sorry to be so harsh…but we have to get your attention.  We hate to see this happen and it does, over and over again.

THIS IS WHAT TIMELESS ARCHITECTURE AND DECOR LOOKS LIKE

You know where these houses gather. You know the kind of neighborhoods we are talking about.  Tree lined streets artistically lit at dawn and dusk, mature and manicured lawns that fill the air with new grass aroma.  Homes with flagstone walkways and entries with just the right amount of moss. Dogwoods and azaleas so perfect in the spring they look like paintings.  These are the neighborhoods of more than one generation. These are the homes we want to peak inside.

You’ve bought a new home in the neighborhood you want to be in.  The kitchen has a pretty good layout, lots of storage and you were sure the stainless appliances and granite counter tops you added were going to make you happy.  You’ve spent a tidy sum of money.

Disclaimer: In the Blog , Minecraft like, world we are to give credit anytime we can find it.  Frankly, this makes me crazy.  Unless a photo or info comes directly from a source I personally know, I am not sure any of us are giving credit correctly anyway.  My feeling is that if you put something online it really is for anyone to see and share.  I think this is the point of most blogs.  But since I have an opinion about yours truly above,  I will follow the rules and give John Lennon credit for the few lines of the song lyrics I “borrowed”.   I had to hunt for an image of him worthy of our blog.  Although I like nearly every song the guy wrote, he, Yoko and that bed thing creeped me out.

So what do did we need help with? Continue reading

THE BEST TUBS AND SHOWERS

Bathroom projects are big.  Every home has one and others have multiple baths.  Except in rare cases, the bathrooms we get calls about are in functional condition…but that’s not all we want from the smallest rooms in our homes.  Nope, we need them to be the rooms that transform us each day.  Rooms that keep our kids happy and trick them into getting ready for bed.   We long for them to be our private sanctuaries…a “Calgon take me away” spot.  It’s a lot to ask of such small real estate.

How do I choose the right shade of white?

Designers have always had a love affair with the colors of  “white”.  Colors so soft they almost melt on the walls.  Colors that look like they feel like velvet and like we could dip our fingers straight thru them.  The creamier the better.  Colors that stay true day or night.

But man…finding just the right white is a bear isn’t it?  We have to laugh when we read about the “signature white” of any certain designer and clients want to use “only” that color. Or when a paint manufacturer calls a paint “Decorator White” and then sells it to everyone without a clue what their home looks like.  Really?  And if you do venture past the recommendation of the paint guy…how many little swatches of “white” are there at any given paint store?  If it was easy to pick the very best, perfect white for your home you’d never need us!

Toolbox

The response during the first week of this blog has been tremendous!  Thank you so much for your positive comments.  We are happy to have our first guest contributor give us his insight when we asked him the following question.

“What are the 5 things everyone should have in their toolbox?

Measuring tape: The most important tool in your toolbox. Unfortunately I did not discover it until later in life. Perfect for hanging pictures without a level, measuring walls for paint, making sure the furniture you purchased will fit through your door. Old Saying….”measure twice…cut once”… saves numerous trips to Lowe’s and Home Depot. Although, they are pretty cool places to hang out.

Hammer– Discovered this tool early in life and never looked back. Need this for hanging pictures and, of course a guy’s best skill, demolition. Can also be used as protection when hunting large game. My favorite is Stanley with the fiberglass shaft.

Saw– Need this for cutting and damaging body parts. My favorite is a saw named Shark (believe that is the name) that is shorter. It is  easier to store and has a real bite, on its intended target…wood.  Gives you notice before you cut your finger completely off.

Screw drivers– This assortment is inexpensive and you get the Phillip’s heads and flat heads. You will find that screw heads come in different sizes…. there are a lot of screws out there.  You can never have enough of these sets which is why they can be an  annual Christmas gift for that hard to buy person on your list.

Pliers– Works like a third hand !. Can also pinch body parts during duels.  A necessary tool for many projects.

Another follower sent us a photo of this tool that has been in his toolbox since he was 11.  For fun, no prize awarded, if you know what this is you can leave the answer in the comment box.

Thanks Bob for these suggestions and tips. Anyone starting off, or downsizing can most definitely use this info.  We’d like to add one more item we will keep in our toolbox….
